Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is a very important year for our pupils; it is their final year at primary school and a year where they show all they have achieved via the taking of SATs and other tests. More importantly, it is the year in which teachers have a responsibility to prepare the children for the transition from primary to secondary school.
During this year, teachers try to prepare and support the children in a number of ways: obviously, it is important that we provide them with a curriculum that enables them to achieve at their best and leave primary school ready to face what is to come; this is done via teachers understanding of testing and providing an appropriate curriculum. In addition to this, we provide them with an appropriate homework timetable that will also enable them to meet the expectations in their chosen secondary schools.
Once at secondary school, children will meet the challenge of having to become much more independent: learning to be taught by a variety of teachers; having to move from lesson to lesson and navigate their way around their new school; getting used to working with different peers in different lessons, to name but a few. At Battle and Langton, Year 6 children are taught different subjects by both teachers, enabling them to get used to how lessons run in a secondary school. Other ways in which we try to foster independence are by providing children with opportunities such as: attending a residential trip; taking part in a performance at the end of the year; and representing the school at a number of outside events.
Most importantly, we want our pupils to leave primary school with fond and happy memories. Therefore, we endeavour to foster a love of learning by making it an enjoyable experience.
